Essay | Horrors of Science

Science is said to be a double-edged weapon. It is a great blessing no doubt. The whole progress of mankind owes to science. It has added countless comforts to our life. It works at our beck and call. It presses our clothes, and cools, and warms our rooms. It has made man to kiss the glories of sky, it has made man to dive into the depths of the oceans and land on the moon. It has shortened the diseases. It has conquered Time and Space. It has controlled and overcome many fatal diseases and decreased the mortality rate.

But it has another aspect a dark aspect which aims at the destruction of humanity. In this age of science, machines have replaced human labor. This has created unemployment in industrial countries. Unemployment causes frustration and despair in the young men and women.

The machines working in mills and factories have added much to the environmental pollution. Air, water, and eatable are polluted by it. Pollution has caused many incurable diseases. Science appears in its most cruel and destructive aspect in modern warfare. Modern warfare is a scientific war. The weapons used are the deadliest possible. High-explosive bombs, missiles, and poisonous gases cause widespread destruction to life and property. In a fraction of a minute, a highly developed city with its schools, colleges, hospitals, shopping centers, and railways is razed to a heap of dust. The smiling fields of crops, cheerful children, and loving mothers cease to exist.

Science has turned man into a material beast. He has become selfish and insincere. Money has become the pedestal of everything. Moral and human values have disappeared under the influence of science. We have forgotten our religious and moral values. We are so deeply rooted in the comforts of life that we have forgotten the importance of service, sacrifice, and human love. Science has robbed us of happiness and peace. It can be said that scientific knowledge if used for the welfare of mankind, can bring happiness and peace to us. If it is used for evil purposes, it will bring destruction to it.
