An
Election
Election to the basic democracy are
formed with the same keenness as shown in great National events. There is great
stir and excitement. Parties of spotters go from house to house securing votes for their respective candidates. Big posters,
using all find words Of Praise for the candidates are displayed on the walls. Brisk
canvassing goes on.
Last years, I happened to see one of
these election campaign. A friend of
mine was a candidate for a seat on the Union Council. First of all we prepare a list of voters, and
then went from house to house canvassing for him. We praised the voters for
their wisdom, Intelligence and many other qualities which they did not
possess. Even the poorest voter was
made to realise that his vote was a national trust and he should cast it
in the favour of our candidate. We also
made tall promises. Our candidate, who
was not much of a speaker, made many funny speeches. He promised to get a hospital and a college
within a week, if he were allowed to serve his people.
On the day of the election, excitement
was at the highest pitch we took our voters in the rickshaws
and cars to the polling booth, and served them with iced drinks. Fortunately,
we won the election by a narrow margin. Great
was or were joy. The successful
candidate was carried shoulder high, and we went round the town, with a band
marching at the head of the
procession. In the evening we had
a grand dinner to celebrate our victory.
