Honesty Is The Best Policy

“Coming events cast their shadows before.”

Honesty is the best policy and an incident from the early life of Abdul Qadir Jelani, the great saint, will suffice to prove the truth of this proverb.

Quotations on “Honesty is the best policy.”

So, it is always said that:

1. “A half-truth is a whole lie.”

2. “It takes strength and courage to admit the truth.”

3. “Honesty is the first lesson in the book of wisdom.”

4. “No legacy is so rich as honesty.”

In his early childhood, Abdul Qadir Jelani was admitted to a Maktab where he got his primary education. His mother was a very pious woman who brought him up with full care and devotion, training him according to the religious code of life.

Abdul Qadir Jilani was very intelligent and ambitious even in his childhood. After completing primary education, he expressed his desire of going to Baghdad for higher studies. Baghdad was renowned all over the world for its schools and universities. The teachers of Abdul Qadir Jilani were also of the same opinion because the boy had an aptitude for learning.

Willy-nilly, his mother also agreed. Preparations were made to send him to Baghdad. His mother sewed a jacket and hid fifty dinars in it for his expenses. When the time of departure came, the pious woman advised her son to be always honest and truthful. He promised his mother to act upon her advice at every cost and in all circumstances.

With all the best wishes of his mother, Abdul Qadir Jilani left for Baghdad with his fellow travelers. They were on foot as was common in those days. On their way to Baghdad, they met a gang of robbers. The robbers caught and captured Abdul Qadir Jilani also and asked him if he had anything precious. The honest and truthful boy very frankly told them that he had fifty dinars sewed up in his jacket. The robbers were surprised at this blunt truth. They took him to their chief who asked the same question from him. Abdul Qadir Jilani, very honestly, gave the same reply and spoke the truth. Everybody including the robbers repented of their bad deeds and decided to lead a godly life. They also decided to be honest and fair in their dealings.

We see that the honesty of Abdul Qadir Jilani helped him at the critical juncture of his life and not only saved him from the clutches of robbers but also exerted a healthy and corrective influence on other people.
