1. Meanings of Essay on Patriotism:
Love
for one's own country is called patriotism. It is passionate about one's own
country. It is a noble instinct. Likewise, it is inborn in man, not inculcated. It is a
natural thing. Man loves his country because he lives in it, breathes its air,
gains protection, drinks its water, eats its food, enjoys its rights,
grows in it, and dies in it. It is instinctive in every creature. Even creatures
like to return to their homelands in the evening. As a baby finds shelter in
his mother's lap, man also finds shelter in his country.
2. Quotations on Patriotism:
So,
it is said:
1.
“Patriotism must be founded on great principles and supported by great virtue.”
(Henry Bolingbrook)
2.
“I realize that patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness
towards anyone.” (Edith Cavell)
3.
“A man's country is not a certain area of land, of mountain, rivers, and woods,
but it is a principle and patriotism is loyalty to that principle.” (William
George Cutis)
4.
“Patriotism has its roots deep in the instincts and affections. Love of country
is the expansion of dutiful love”
(D.D. Field)
3. History of Patriotism:
Having
a chicken’s eye view on the pages of history, we come to realize that everyone
was once a patriot. Adam loved his first dwelling, i.e., paradise. When he was heaved
down and began to animate on earth, he evoked affection in that place also. Those
who love their country grow eternal in the pages of history. Nationalistic people like Tipu Sultan, Sirajuduallah, Liaquat Ali Khan, Major Aziz Bhatti,
Syed Ahmed Shaheed, Quaid-e-Azam, and Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan are loved and cherished
by the people. But the traitors like Mir. Jaffar and Mir. Sadiq is always
looked down upon by the people.
4. Patriotism as Passion:
Patriotism
is a grand passion. It polishes man's inherent capabilities. It makes a man
brave, courageous and sacrificing. Furthermore, it brands his enduring hardships and facing
grave dangers with a laughing face. Patriotism is in reality a noble ardor, and
the absence of its miles is deplorable. It assumes different shapes in different
people. Some people love their language, nation, race, or country more than
others. But everyone has a color of patriotism in one sense or the other.
5. Islamic Concept of Patriotism:
An Islamic
theory of patriotism has a great extent. It is not distressed with nation,
language, race, or country. It sustains that all Muslims are one nation, all
Muslim country is one country, and hence everybody sacrifices for a preeminent because, i.e., for the uplift of Allah's words.
6. Role of Hitler in Patriotism:
But
too much patriotism proves dangerous also. It makes man narrow-minded, fair, and
prejudiced. A patriot loves everything that belongs to his country but finds
faults with everything that is manufactured by his rival country. This attitude
develops contempt and score towards all the other countries. Many wars in the
world have been fought out of the passion of patriotism. The fortune-seekers ignite the passions of their youth and make them fight against other nations. Adolf Hitler exploited the patriotism of the German Youth and Mussolini those of the Italian
Youth. It is a negative passion. People cut each other's throats without any
remorse in the name of Patriotism. They see things from a specific angle. They
appreciate the faults of their own people and abominate the virtues of the
rival nation. Furthermore, they find justification for every kind of crime in the name of
patriotism and commit every type of offense against humanity.
7. Conclusion:
To
conclude, we may say that we should have patriotism. It is not a bad thing. We
should promote patriotism if it teaches the lesson of endurance and tolerance.
It should be humanistic and universal. It should not go against
internationalism. Therefore, rational patriotism is better than sentimental
patriotism.
