The
generally accepted the division of prose into that which conveys information and
that which is a vehicle of energy can be nearly paroled by a division of
story-telling into the story which just tells you of a succession of events and
the story which incarnates, by dramatic representation, and intuitive
philosophy. The vision embodied in that kind of fiction which we call creative
is akin to dramatic poetry in its expression, but the form of prose fiction
allows a full treatment of familiar details. The details and the events
encourage and feed our curiosity. The order in which the reader acquires facts
and the impression is a part of the process which is shaping the vision. The arrangement called 'plot' is therefore as important as style: it shares with
style the creation of an atmosphere which is the essence of a story's peculiar reality.
