Conrad's
Imagination
In the Prefatory Note
to Within the Tides, Conrad replies to a reviewer who has observed his
preference for writing about men in outlandish situations. The reviewer has
suggested that the author found a freer play for his imagination in dealing with
characters untrammelled by ordinary worldly circumstances. He did not seek any
special imaginative freedom or larger play of fancy.
