A Friend In Need Is a Friend Indeed (Standard)

Once upon a time, there lived two poor young men in a village. One of them was strong and giant sized. The other was frail and pygmy sized. The common cause between them was their employment. They had heard the old saying that a change of place brings about a change in luck. So they decided to set out on a journey in order to try the saying as well as their luck. They had pledged to standby each other through thick and thin. One day, when they were passing through a jungle, they saw a dangerous bear rushing towards them. The tall man, without caring for his companion in his plight, jumped up and climbed up a tall pine tree and was out of the excess of the bear. The other did not know how to climb up a tree. For him, there was no way of escape. But he was wise and quick at wit. He began to think about his life. A golden saying The beer does not touch a corpse’ began to echo in his ears. So, he, at once, lay down on the ground. When the bear approached him, he held his breath and posed to be dead. The bear fell upon him, smelt him all over from head to toe, took him for the corpse and went away on his way. When the bear was well out of sight, the tall fellow climbed down the tree and said to the short man, ‘ what did the bear whisper to your ears’? He gave me a good piece of advice, the grieved companion sad. Never accompany a person who leaves in the lurch’. Saying this, he started his journey alone.

 Moral:
A friend in need is a friend indeed.
Fair weather friends always leave in the lurch.
Beware of fair-weather friends.
Never trust selfish friends.
