Kurtz As Man - god :
Kurtz enjoys such great respectability and adoration among the natives of Africa that they worship him as man-god. They cannot think in terms of their man-god meeting his death, or his departing and leaving them in the lurch. They are simple and innocent people believing in all sorts of superstitions. They believe that if Kurtz dies are left them, they will be annihilated. Therefore, they do not want him to go. The awe of the natives towards the death of a man-god----The death of a man-god for whom no successor has been provided---- is clearly seen in the brief passage about Fresleven. It is obvious that the gentle Fresleven had been regarded as a man-god by the natives. His sudden death destroyed the group.
Kurtz had been able to establish the ritual which would allay the anxieties of the natives and therefore, maintain his own position. The ritual---- the sacrifice of a young and vigorous man, and the consuming of a portion of his body ( that is the question of the acceptability of the death of a proxy) would make the man-god strong and vigorous. When Kurtz ’s illness became more frequent and pronounced, this right well was performed to see the infirm Kurtz becoming strong and vigorous.
