Fashions
Fashion is a style of clothing, hair, dresses, behaviour or of living that is popular with a specific period of time and area. Fashions vary from time to time and area to area. Some fashions are popular with the people of an area whereas they are hated by others. But soon they are often seen following them. Fashions have been popular since the very inception of human society. It is the result of the urge of man to look distinctive. For this purpose, he spends lavishly on the novel items:
- Fashions are born and they die too quickly for anyone to love them. (Bettina Ballard)
- Fashion is made to become unfashionable. (Coco Chanel)
- Fashionability is a kind of elevated vulgarity. (G. Darley)
- Eat to please thyself, but dress to please others. (Benjamin Franklin)
- Fashion, for the most part, is nothing but ostentation of the riches. (Joh Locke)
- Nothing is so dangerous as being too modern; one is apt to grow old fashioned quite suddenly. (Oscar Wilde)
- Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months. (Oscar Wilde)
Fashions are generally more popular with women. It is said that chameleon does not change its colour as quickly as a woman wears out a new fashion. But men of the president age or no left behind women in following fashions. Sometimes it seems that there is going on a race between men and women . Actually, fashion is a sort of race between the people of the upper class and the lower class.
Fashions are always popular with the youth. The reason is, the wish to show themselves off in youth is strong. Children are too small to be aware of it. The aged are too old to pay any serious thought to it. On the other hand, the young find excitement and enjoyment in life. Therefore, they apply all sorts of devices that make them look more attractive and distinctive.
Some fashions look decent but some others look very odd. Still, it is not recorded as odd to follow any fashion blindly because following others end of man's own identity. That's why; some people coin their own new fashions. For this purpose, there are institutions that design and introduce new fashions. Those who approach them, become the pioneers. Others have to follow them finding novelty in their dress.
Fashions are more popular in cities than the villages. It is because most of the fashions are a luxury. The villages are mostly simple, poor, illiterate and backward. They cannot afford to indulge in fashions. On the other hand, the people living in cities are rich, clever and advanced. So, they find glamour in every new fashion. But modern age has eliminated the difference between the villages and cities. People living at far off forest lands have TV and even mobile which train them in the latest fashions and models. The only difference is that the ladies belonging to rich families buy imported items of fashion whereas the poor ladies are content with local items. Normally classes try their best to look distinctive.
But fashion among the student is a bad rather harmful thing. When they indulge in fashions, their trend of thinking change. They lose interest in studies. They always think and talk of fashions and try to excel others. They do not realise what is more important for them. The students of poor families fall prey to the inferiority complex. They compelled their parents to meet their indecent demands. In this way, their genuine demands remain unfulfilled.
It is a fact that the west is the mother of evils and the home of all fashions weather decent or odd. We just copy them because they are leading prosperous lives. Fashions reflect the thinking and character of people. For example, Western fashions are the clear index of their mode of thinking and feeling. Islamic dress, cap and dupatta reflect all decency, sobriety and simplicity. It has more charm and attraction in it than the western dress which has all nakedness and indecency. So, we should follow the Islamic dress because our holy prophet ( Peace Be Upon Him) put on such dress. There is all good in the Islamic dress whereas there is all harm involving the western fashions that keep changing at every step and every moment and varies in different territories.
Beauty lies in grace; grace lies in simplicity and simplicity lies in Islam.
Therefore, it is all that we are to learn.
