United You Stand, Divided You Fall

United you stand, divided you fall.

A FARMER AND HIS SONS

We all know that union is strength. The oft-read story of the wise old father and his three sons will illustrate the truth of this proverb.

An old and ailing father much worried at the disunity among his sons. He knew that the disunity among them would lead them to destruction.

The irresponsible and inexperienced sons turned a deaf ear to their father’s advice. They knew that their father would breathe his last within a few days and they would be free to act and to choose.

The father, on the other hand, wanted to impress upon them the importance of unity before his death. This was the only be in his bonnet and he wanted to get rid of it. He prayed to God for help. He sent for his sons and asked them to bring a bundle of kids. The sons supposed that their father was not in sense. However, they brought a bundle to his sons one by one and asked them to break it. None could do so.

United you stand, divided you fall.

He untied the bundle and distributed the sticks among his sons and asked them to break the sticks. It was an easy job and everybody did it. Then the father analyzed and explained the whole situation to them and brought home to them the importance of unity. The sons had seen the whole situation with their own eyes and decided to remain united throughout their lives.

MORAL:

a)   Union is strength.

b)   United you stand, divided you fall.
