Sports
and games are essential for character training. They are indispensable for the
body like food grains and fresh water. They are an important source of
recreation. There is a well-known proverb:
“All
work and no play make Jack a dull boy.”
This
world of today is full of worries, anxieties and ever new tensions. After a day’s
work, man requires some rest and recreation. If he does not relax, his life
becomes dull and boring and he himself becomes peevish. In order to relax, all the wise people adopt some healthful recreation. Games and
sports, particularly outdoor games, or essential for this purpose.
The
development countries like England, Germany, France and the USA have made games an
essential part of their education. That is why; in our country also, vast parks,
playgrounds and gymnasiums for set up for proper physical exercise. The lesson
in the classroom does not have an as deep and lasting impact on character as that
is learnt in the playground. The reason is that the lesson learnt in classroom
bears only theoretical importance whereas the lesson learnt in the playground
has deep practical effect.
General
sports include hunting, Fishing, Riding, Cycling, Mountaineering, walking,
jogging, jumping, swimming, rolling, wrestling, boxing, Hammer throwing, light
weight lifting and gymnastic. Moreover, football, hockey, cricket, tennis,
badminton and table tennis are very favourite games with young boys.
Games
and sports create the spirit of sportsmanship, cheerfulness, discipline, fellowship,
tolerance, patients, courage, endurance, loyalty, sacrifice, confidence and
physical fitness. Both the winner and the loser have to accept the results. When
a player wins, he is not elated and proud. When he loses, he is not crest-fallen
and dejected.
Games
provide a healthy outlet to the surplus energy of the youth. If a healthy outlet
is not provided, it expresses itself in the form of mischief, strikes, lockouts
and other evil activities. Games occupy the leisure time of the youth and leave
them with no time and energy to loiter about the bad company.
Sports
and games develop the personality of the youngsters. They teach them how to
lead a corporate life. They learn the
importance of team-work. In a game, every player is a member of the team. He
needs to play not to his benefit but rather for the entire group. Therefore, he
demonstrates a productive member of society in a useful life. Games and sports
make the players disciplined, punctual, regular, active, energetic commerce,
smart, quick, helpful, cooperative, beautiful and trustworthy. They also learn
how to be and how to order others. They learn how to sacrifice for others which
teaches them selfishness. Strict obedience to the instructions of the captain
makes them law-abiding. When the earth the team-lead, they learn how to plan
for better results.
Games
and sports refresh the body as well as the mind of the players by soothing their
taut nerves. They make them solid and solid to bear the obligations of a viable
life. That is why it is said:
“An a sound mind in a sound body.”
In
order to keep our bodies healthy, strong, active and energetic, games are
essential because health is wealth. Loss of health is the loss of wealth. It is
a fact that it is always the healthy, active young men who work hard and lead
the nation to the heights of glory and make it honourable in the ranks of the
nations.
