GOODBYE MR. CHIPS (NOVEL)

QUESTIONS AND SHORT ANSWERS

Q.1. What was the effect of Katherine's death on Chips? (FB-10, MN, SG-11, LR-13, BP, MN-14, SL 15, BP-16)

Ans. After Katherine's death, Chips was badly shaken. He was totally different and everybody noticed it. His hair turned grey. He wore his gown that was almost too tattered to hold together. He was the man who looked "old" now.

Q.2. How was Chips' physical health after the death of Katherine? (GW-, MN-14) OR Why did he want to give up his mastership? OR What changes did Katherine's death bring in Chips? (FB-10, GW-12)

Ans. Chips was physically very active and strong. But the shock of his wife's death had broken him inwardly. He again went into the past. He lost interest in his lessons. His gown was tattered. In short, he could not overcome his shock.

Q.3. Why did the Head ask Mr Chips not to give up housemaster ship? (RP-11)

Ans. The Head knew well that Chips was badly shattered due to the tragic death of his wife. He knew that if he broke with the school and resorted to an isolated life, he would also die soon. Therefore, he asked him to continue so that he might remain busy.
