Glimpses of Grammar
Introduction: This chapter attempt to examine the
principles that underlie good written English and to suggest some methods which
can be helpful to an average student in writing correct English. We have
purposely avoided to many grammatical labels which generally frighten even the
keenest student in the pursuit of learning. Grammar is, no doubt, a hateful
thing; but we cannot do without grammar. It is the foundation of a language;
and how can you build without any foundation? Grammar is not an end in itself. It
is only means of avoiding many obvious error that creep into the writing of an
unconscious student. By degrees, correct expression will come naturally without
any conscious attention to grammatical rules. According to John O’ London the
best guide to English is not grammar but common sense and” good English follows
clear thinking rather than that system of rules called grammar which youth
loathes and maturity forgets”.
“Clear thinking” and” accurate expression” are the
desired goals of every student, but he needs an elementary knowledge of grammar
to detect errors that may occur in the course of his composition. The object of
the chapter is to take up some familiar parts of speech in turn, state their
function and demonstrate their correct use by suitable illustrations. We hope a
careful study of these examples with enable the student who discover his errors
and correct them without the help of a teacher.
